Sounds about right, 8Mb/s = around 750KB/s. You may be confusing megabits(Mb) with megabytes (MB) :)

Anyway I have 8Mb/s myself, I usually max out at around 750KB/s, so I do get exactly what I pay for :p

It's the fastest you can get in this part of Ireland at the moment, apparently they are bringing 24Mb/s here soon, but development for that kind of stuff here is slow, especially now that our economy is absolutely ruined and we're having massive cuts for everything.

So try downloading really late at night, and hope that there are no other people aware of the lack of usage in your neighborhood during the night time, and see what kind of speeds you can get. Although it's also possible that for some reason they did limit you.

Well if that's your definition of being screwed, but all of the internet companies I've ever seen explain all of this as you order it. They give you a contention ratio and the speed in megabits (megabits is standard, and because it gives people the false idea that they are getting 2,000KB/s when they're actually renting 250KB/s or so).

And if you become limited, they've likely got a reason to limit you and it's probably in their nice long Terms of Service which they know you won't read. But in reality what they're doing is all legal, just really annoying, it would be a lot nicer if they were more straightforward :)

Thanks for the information, I had no idea that there would be shared internet connections, however I never really read up on it either. I'll try doing it again really late at night, seeing how I stay up to 1am anyway. I don't notice much of a difference when I do download later at night, but I might get lucky tonight. :p

And it was interesting because the first night of my modem, when I was getting up to 1 Mb every second, it was in the normal time that I download my usual files. ( I downloaded a whole game, which I paid for then lost the disk.., in less than 2 hours - 5 GB )

That's not exactly epic. It can be much better.
My Internet is 150Mbps (so the ISP claims, although Windows says it's 100mbps - I've got a lot of speedtests done but they're old - I can't do one because my Opera 11 alpha build is crashing when I go to speedtest.net now :/)

It's not Windows that limit's the speed; It's the network adapter. The router can limit it too, but Windows shows you the network adapter's speed.

That's mine. I'm actually paying for 10mbps (or was it 12?), but speedtest is lying to me as usually. Also, this gives me a maximum of 1.337 (Not kidding!) mb/s download speed, which I'm happy with. The next step up would be 100mbps OR 120 mbps (from another ISP), with 100mbps costing about 9 euros per month as of February (free for January), and 120 mbps costing around 26 EUR per month. Now, neither is available in my house, 120 mbps isn't even available in my town AFAIK, and my router (wireless router... It's a laptop y'know) limits the speed to 54 mbps. Therefore, that 10mbps is the best I can get without moving to an apartment.

What do you mean that's impossible? How do you know you downloaded at 7,000KB/s? Where did you see that statistic? In a piece of software? That doesn't make it correct by any means, you may have also been downloading from local servers or it may have been downloading cached information.

I'm not sure what you mean by impossible though, because the actual facts are that if you are indeed being given 20 Mb/s, then you have a max download speed of 2.5 MB/s from the internet, if you get 7 MB/s from a 20 Mb/s connection then it's not a 20 Mb/s connection is it? Because 7 MB/s is far larger than 20 Mb/s by my calculations, it's actually 54 Mb/s, so then you actually have a 54 Mb/s connection if you are downloading from the internet at 7 MB/s.

No, upload speed is not related to download in some cases. I've got my download speed capped to 60Mbps, but my upload can get up to 80Mbps on a good night (when there are not many users accessing the site hosted on the connection).

And this is a connection to a speedtest mini hosted on my local computer.

Sounds about right, 8Mb/s = around 750KB/s. You may be confusing megabits(Mb) with megabytes (MB) :)

Anyway I have 8Mb/s myself, I usually max out at around 750KB/s, so I do get exactly what I pay for :p

It's the fastest you can get in this part of Ireland at the moment, apparently they are bringing 24Mb/s here soon, but development for that kind of stuff here is slow, especially now that our economy is absolutely ruined and we're having massive cuts for everything.

The Netherlands' main ISP, Ziggo, is one of the best in the world.
They offer internet packages up to 120 Mbit/s, which they can actually handle very well.

Though many factors should be considered when measuring DL/UL speed, like the amount of traffic on the entire network, the route chosen from one server to another etc. etc.

These results were from times of day where not many people were online.
On peak hours my connection is around 50 Mb/s.

Besides, if you don't trust it, look at the source address of the images.
