No, one character represents 4 bits as it is a single hexidecimal character. However I too am unsure how I came up with the number 145 for the output.

I know, but thats not a public server. There is only my account in the database which I can modify myself. But when we're talking about the speed, it takes less than a second to register an account, and I'm not having 500 players trying to create account in the same time, but maybe 1 player in 10 minutes haha. Okay I'll stick with it, and just for information, can you tell me how Whirlpool can be 512bit if it generates a 145 char hash? I just don't understand it, I thought one bit is one char.

IIRC Whirlpool is 512bit, which is more secure than 256 but possibly slightly slower (though I have no figures). If you are already using Whirlpool then stick with it - there's no way to change and keep existing accounts.

I was researching some encryption algorithms / hashes for PHP and mostly everyone says sha256 method is best / most secure. So I'm wondering, if you said Whirlpool (which I'm using on my server and in my PHP scripts) is one of the best algorithms, what to use? I'm asking it, because Whirlpool is available through PHP's hash() function, but everyone uses sha256 method. What do you suggest me to use?
