For me it's the price and freedom.
Why pay $5 for 10 slots when I can buy a $5 VPS and have a non-laggy server with 50 people?

You can even host your community's website/forum on a 2 GB RAM and decent CPU VPS, along with your SA-MP server. And it's just $5 or even less in promotions.

It's really not fair to compare hard drive space. A shared host doesn't allow you to host anything else than a SA-MP server and perhaps a database. But you've got to have a shit ton of data to fill the (at least) 10 GB of space that most VPS providers offer. I seem to remember a forum with 2.5 million messages being about 6 gigabytes.

If the DDoS protection provided for the VPS is better than the dedicated gameserver host, then the VPS would obviously be better as you get more resources and you're in full control. Otherwise, a dedicated gameserver host that puts effort and care in keeping your server always online is your choice.

pretty sure we're comparing vps to shared host not vps to dedicated servers

He's probably just using dedicated server a bit loose, where it'll turn out that it's simply a gamehost he's referring to, that's 'dedicated' to being a gamehost.

Exactly
