Default Windows 10

Hi. I am going to install Windows 10 and need some advice and things from people who have already installed the update:

- What kind of backups and files do I need to make sure to get prior to upgrading?
- How long can I expect it to take to actually install after being downloaded?

I just upgraded from Windows 8 a few minutes ago. Everything seems to be kept in the upgrade, although my antivirus and Origin did not start anymore. I was able to start Origin again by going to it's executable in the install folder, but ended up re-installing my antivirus.
I didn't back up anything, but it's always a good idea to back up your most important things (pictures, documents, savegames perhaps?).

My installation took around 5 - 10 minutes. I can't really say for sure since I wasn't paying attention at all, but it also depends on how fast your computer is I guess..
Good luck, I think you'll be happy once you're upgraded. I know I am!

For some reason the tool is downloading super slow. I'm trying to create a bootable USB but it takes ages.

EDIT: Apparently restarting it helped. Oh well ...

I think I'm just going to move the important things to my Dropbox before upgrading.

I still haven't gotten a popup or anything, sad story when I used this method:

It spent like 2 (maybe more, maybe less, not completely sure) or just a very long time just to download then it got stuck nearly 25% through on Preparing Installation.

I am trying it again since I haven't gotten the official popup or whatever.

Edit: It failed after almost 15% percent, fuck.

Installed it on a VM today so I could experiment with it a bit before upgrading.

What bothered me during setup was that there were hardly any progress bars. You're just stuck looking at endlessly spinning dots. For all you know installation may be stuck. Upon installation completion I didn't go for "Express settings" but instead turned all the intrusive crap off. Microsoft really has no business with browsing habits.

Also don't like all the XBox promotion. Who would want to stream their XBox to their PC? We know console gamers are couch potatoes. If anything, do it the other way around. Other than that it seems fine. I'm especially fond of the "corner snapping" and multiple desktops. Shutdown button is back where it belongs.

Edit: @Abagail and others:

Downloading it now, still a little edgy about upgrading. Some of my files, such as a couple of films etc, are huge in size so I'm unable to move them to my Dropbox.

Do you think I'll be fine upgrading without backing them up?

I'm not getting windows 10. Seems like windows 8.1, which was dreadful, merged with windows 7 so I'd rather stick with windows 7.
